The latest podcast from behaviortherapist.com discusses obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Dr. Jonathan Abramowitz, a preeminent researcher in the OCD field, discusses multiple topics related to OCD, including:
- What is OCD? Descriptions of the disorder in general, as well as different ways that the disorder can present itself.
- Treatments for OCD: He discusses a multitude of treatments for OCD, not only the front-line empirically-supported treatments but less-researched treatments as well. Dr. Abramowitz goes into especial detail about exposure and ritual prevention. In my opinion, he offers an excellent description of the rationale behind this treatment as well as a detailed account of what actually happens in this treatment. He also discusses the current state of the literature on the interaction of medications and psychotherapy for OCD.
- How to find a treatment provider who will provide evidence-based treatment for OCD...he actually provides excellent advice for how to interview a therapist for the treatment of any disorder (or group of disorders).
- He closes with recommendations for online resources for anyone looking for more information: the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation, Anxiety Disorders Association of America, and the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.
